This sampler worked in coloured silk threads on a linen ground shares the same format, central scene and verse as one worked by Maria Clark aged 7 years old, indicating the same school or teacher. Conservation mounted and framed in period frame.

A New Map of Scotland for Ladies Needlework

The title of this rare silk map is at the top left hand corner within a cartouch surrounded by greenery and a tartan swag with a highlander in traditional dress. A paper version of this map is in the collection of the National Library of Scotland, whilst another copy is owned by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.

Contained in the original oval mahogany frame.

Exceptionally finely worked embroidered silk map, worked by Ann Jeffrey in 1826. Worked on a silk Satin ground the map shows England and Wales divided into its counties. The county borders are worked in different coloured chenille thread. This map in common to some others of the period was printed onto the silk for the girls to embroider over. For more information on map samplers see 'Samplers Mapped and Charted' catalogue published by Witney Antiques. This example remains in exceptional original condition and with good original colour.
